Explaining Barrett's Ablation

Gastroenterology Associates of Arlington and Southlake, TX, explain that you may need Barrett's Ablation if you suffer from chronic gastroesophageal reflux. The tissue in the lining of your esophagus becomes the target of chronic inflammation due to stomach acid flowing backward into your esophagus. Chronic inflammation, such as GERD, increases your risk for esophageal cancer called Barrett's esophagus.

Barrett's Ablation therapy is a treatment that destroys damaged esophageal cells, thus preventing further progression of possible cancer.

There are three different treatments of this nature, such as:

  • Cryoablation Therapy - Thermal injury targets abnormal cells using extremely cold gas, freezing and killing diseased and abnormal cells. This procedure is safe and non-invasive.
  • Radiofrequency or RAF - High-energy radio waves kill precancerous and cancerous cells. Our doctor uses special tools to deliver this energy in different settings.
  • Barrx - uses radiofrequency heat to kill abnormal cells. Our doctor passes an endoscope through your mouth and into your esophagus to view the entire esophagus and target abnormal cells with radiofrequency ablation. The procedure takes 30–60 minutes while you are asleep.

Barrett's Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure. Our doctor uses anesthesia to put you to sleep during this procedure, which uses an endoscope. This tool is a long, thin, flexible tube that the doctor passes through your mouth and into your esophagus to examine and correct cell damage.

If the damage to your esophagus is extensive and advanced, our doctors may opt to do a mucosal resection. This procedure removes all affected tissue using an endoscopic procedure that remains a minimally invasive procedure.

As with any endoscopic procedure, you are in excellent surgical hands with our surgical doctors, who use innovative treatment options to get you on an excellent, healthy path with your digestive system.
